The secret lies in the magnet

Designed for the rapid isolation of molecules, such as RNA, poly-A(+) mRNA, and DNA, as well as the rapid purification of proteins, Bio-Nobile’s MagRo™ 8-M Robotic Workstation and PickPen® are based on patented magnetic particle bioseparation technology.

Unlike other commercial magnetic bioseparation systems, which normally rely on fixed external magnets and liquid transfer to achieve separation, Bio-Nobile’s innovative PickPen® magnetic tool moves magnetic particles.

When the PickPen’s retractable magnetic tip is dipped into a solution, magnetic particles become attached to it, enabling them to be withdrawn and transferred to another solution in a series of wash steps. Particles, and the desired attached substance, can be transferred quickly and effortlessly.

Particles remain attached when the PickPen’s magnet is extended, and are released when it is retracted. Proprietary elastic silicone rubber tips eliminate the danger of cross-contamination.

The PickPen provides broad-ranging experimental flexibility, as users can choose vessels and formats freely to suit their work, rather than being tied to one format throughout a procedure. The PickPen is also very sparing in its use of sample material. Effective separations have been demonstrated using sample volumes of less than 10 µl.

Enhancing automated sample purification

The MagRo™ robotic workstation brings the advantages of PickPen technology to automated sample purification.

The MagRo combines a PickPen tool for magnetic particle processing with high-precision liquid handling to automate routine laboratory tasks. This unique approach simplifies the automation of sample purification protocols and enables PickPen technology to be applied to larger sample batch sizes.

The flexible design of the MagRo’s software allows users to select ready-to-go protocols, tailor-made protocols, or their own protocols to carry out both purification as well as pre- and post-purification pipetting on the same compact platform.

Numerous potential applications

Bio-Nobile supplies reagents, chemistries, and reagent packs optimised for use with the PickPen in work on protein chemistry and molecular biology purification and fractionation.

QuickPick™ kits are available for the rapid purification of polyA(+) mRNA from sample material, such as cultured cells, plants, total RNA, or tissue – even down to samples consisting of only a few cells. Kits are also available for DNA and protein purification, containing optimised magnetic particles, buffers, and assay procedures.
